Are you thinking about 11 plus tuition? Here’s what you need to know!

The 11+ exam is a selective entrance test for grammar and independent schools in England, typically taken by children in September of Y6. Walsall and Birmingham schools are part of the West Midlands Grammar School Partnership. This means that your child will only need to be registered once and will only need to take one test to apply to Grammar schools in these areas.

What is involved in the 11+?

The exam for the West Midlands Grammar School partnership is provided by the GL exam board and will cover:
Mathematics
• Problem solving
• Speed, accuracy and fluency
• Mental arithmetic
Your child will need to have covered all the KS2 maths Curriculum, including Y6, before taking the exam.

English
• Grammar, punctuation and spelling
• Comprehension

Verbal Reasoning
• Problem solving and following written instructions
• Sequencing, algebra and number logic
• Synonyms, antonyms and analogies

Non-Verbal and spatial Reasoning
• Geometry: Working out nets and how shapes look when folded
• Sequencing: working out which diagram comes next in a sequence
• Patterns: rotation and symmetry

How can we help?

The 11+ exam preparation can feel overwhelming. At Kip McGrath Aldridge, we will initially support your child to master the necessary core mathematical and English objectives before applying these skills to 11+ activities. Through a variety of high-quality resources, we can familiarise your child with all aspects of the 11+ and guide you through the necessary work at home. All work is marked by tutors and lessons continuously adapted to suit each child. As we provide feedback after every session, you will be kept fully up to date with your child’s progression, strengths and areas for improvement.

Places are the schools are very sought after and as a result the standards are high. On average children will need to be working at a year above their peers in terms of maths and English and have a strong work ethic/ willingness to study.

If you would like more information about the 11+ journey please contact the centre, where we will be happy to book a free assessment and give you detailed information.
